    How The WooFDriver Does COOLING

I'd like to preface this by saying that proper and consistent grooming is to me one of the most important aspects for helping Dogs regulate their proper body temperature. NEVER shave or cut a double coated Dog's fur unless for medical purposes.  Some people and maybe even groomers think by shaving or cutting their fur will help the Dog keep cooler but it actually has a reverse effect and can, and is often, a detriment to the Dog.  Proper and consistent grooming will remove dead fur while keeping live fur intact. Therefore the dead fur won't block air from the Dog's skin which can create a breeding place for bacteria and because  this dead fur will not let the Dog's coat breathe properly it will inhibit cooling and warming as well. Live fur helps the natural cooling and warming process of Dogs and protects them against other hazards as well, and I can't stress enough again that no one unless veterinary prescribed/preformed for medical purposes should ever cut or shave a double coated Dog's fur! Cooling Dogs can be a very tricky and a difficult if not impossible process. If a Dog overheats veterinary care is immediately recommended as it's quickly fatal. So please ALWAYS be over cautious and error on the side of safety as again heat can be so deadly so quickly to Dogs.  I personally use these methods on my website here and they work well for me BUT I am not ever over working my Dogs in warmer temperatures and my Dogs hair length & fur condition are right for me for these practices which again can vary from breed to breed and even individual Dog to Dog. So please everything you see here is just suggestions as you need to understand all parameters and your Dog's condition and personality so you can recognize any issues before they could quickly get out of hand. There are two pages under this COOLING IDEAS menu tab that I show some of my misting systems from past to present and evaporative cooling vests. I suggest researching on your own and most definitely consulting with your veterinarian additional information to make the most well rounded decision if you think any of the processes I discuss and show here will work for your Dog.

Additionally proper hydration is imperative for cooling a Dog in all temperatures. Even when it seems cold outside to us humans Dogs still need to cool and quench their thirst by drinking. When I run my Dogs on any of my bikes and/or rigs I water them regularly. CLICK HERE TO SEE MORE ON HOW & WHEN I WATER THEM ON DogMotoSports Adventures!

    WooFDriver's Temperature & Humidity Procedures

Some mushers (depending on their area) use a temperature + humidity sum (total) and set a threshold (for ease of explaining here) like 100 or even 120 for very light exercise but that’s humidity and temperature added together! And this is different than the “feels like” temperature which I believe is more like a heat index which I actually prefer! I try to stay out of direct sunlight as much as possible (cloudy days are usually best) unless it’s cold like typically in winter around here in Maryland. I try to stay in temperature “feels like” below 80 depending on the activity we are doing!! At the high end of the “feels like” of 80 I try to make sure there’s plenty of water spots to get in the water (as long as it’s safe) we can access for really efficient cool downs. If I run/walk them off-leash I may push the “feels-like” above 80 when in the woods but again as long as there’s plenty of spots for them to get in water like streams ponds etc… also nighttime runs are high on my list to avoid the sun of course and usually temps and humidity can be more manageable! Also because of our location, I can get to the mountains, usually within a couple hours where again usually more favorable conditions to be found! Please always keep in mind when we do get to adventure in the warmer weather (temperatures are not too hot) DogMotoSports is the reason why because of the motor assisted dog sleds they don't need to exert themselves in a manner that could cause them to over heat! Our adventures than become more like a glorified dog walk!

    Cooling Vests

I use ice pack style gel vest that isn’t truly ice as to not shock their system which would defeat the cooling purpose but it maintains safe temperature to assist with cooling and to provide some longevity before it losses its coolness.  This design was originally created I believe for military working dogs for the desert wars the USA fought,  the biggest issue I have with GEL packs is the added weight for the dog, and the vest acting like a coat limiting some airflow, so need to be cognizant how that can affect your dog. I like the GlacierTek Chilly Dog Vests the best because they are worn on the underside of the dog closest to internal organs whiuch I believe is more effevtive for cooling! I've used other styles such as the mesh ones in the photo below which i like for the lighter weight but don't like how it's worn on the top part of the dog seeming less effective for cooling but still may have a purpose for certain situations. Additionally I have used the XDog weighted vests which have a side pocket moving the cooling GEL a little closer to the dog's underside whcih again for certain situations may be effective.

    COOL DOWNS IN THE VAN

When we are done our adventure, we return to my van which has 3 air conditioners, multiple fans, and cold water cooler fed cooling mats for the dogs! Not quite a refrigerated van but we can get it pretty cold! The van is always cooling as I have a driver that follows us on the trail (driving the van on roads near the trail or if possible follows directly behind us) so there is no warm time in it when we are done it’s cool or even cold and ready for the dogs! My van driver (I call my wingman) will also pick us up if we need to get off the trail quickly as maybe trail conditions deteriorate or a dog tires out etc… Now keep in mind I’ve been running sled dogs for over 30 years this isn’t my first rodeo so EXTREME caution is ALWAYS happening, my dogs are my family and they are my life! You’ve NEVER seen anything like this!

LYRICS How to Make-’em Sweat (For Cooling Effects)

WooFDriver wants to give his PAK all the fun and runs he can under the sun!! But the biggest feat  that exists is the dogs ability to emit their heat and cool them  down which is common amongst the hounds!!  Most dogs don't sweat so there is no evaporating wet.

Overheating is very serious stuff for our ruff ruffs,  so caution must be taken so there is no mistaken!!  Heat will defeat our dogs and easily deplete their  all, it is usually fatal so please don't under estimate it. Know the signs, be alert of the time and keep your dogs safety in the for front of your mind!!

With that said WooFDriver cautiously forges ahead, and  gets  his dogs to spend their summer time with only cooling abilities in mind!!

WooFDriver has designed a cooling system which assist this  and actually  mists his hounds down with cool water as they run their furwheeling rounds!! Their than wet fur,  WooFDriver believes  helps relieve  some of the dogs heat and achieves some of their cooling needs!! The wet evaporates from their hair almost acting like our  sweat which cools  us humans to a certain extent and hopefully presents the pups with similar cooling effects!!

Of course in the warmer weather certain times of day should help dictate when the dogs play. Early morning or after sunset is usually a cooler time to be outside!!   Also with the warmer temperatures in mind WooFDriver designs the pups activity  time to be on the limited side and constantly looks for any signs of stress on our rides!! WooFDriver also at this time does way less play sets to avoid any heat stress because again this can be a tragic mess!!!

WooFDriver also  strives to  take the mutts to ruff their stuff and drive their rides  where there  are streams, ponds or pools to take a dip and cool especially their underside where their internal organs lie!! WooFDriver believes this is also important indeed to cool them down and keep them comfortable while trotting around!!

WooFDriver is all about getting  the PAK to let them air their energy  out as long is there is no doubt he can keep them cool in route with spouts of water and other cooling measures he can carefully provide them with endless pleasures!!

    COOLING IN WATERWAYS

ON OUR ADVENTURES WHEN WE CAN ACCESS WATER I WILL TAKE THEM FOR DIPS IN RIVERS, STREAMS AND OTHER WATER WAYS EVEN WHEN HARNESSED TO EQUIPMENT

    PAD SWEAT

Cool By Submerging Thier Paw Pads

Dogs Sweat Through Thier Paw Pads

Waterways can offer an excellent opportunity to cool a Dog without the need to swim. You see Dogs sweat through Merocrine Glands which are in their paw pads! So by submerging their paw pads in water it can help them cool! In fact on our WooFDriver Adventures when there aren't any places for the Dogs to submerge their paw pads I will either spray a puddle around them from my misting system or carry a PAW MUG like A PAW PLUNGER designed for submerging a Dog's Paw Pads for cleaning but I use it to cool them also!
